Ron Sparks has burst onto the Canadian comedy scene in an incredibly short period of time. He first began performing as a member of York University's Vanier Improv Company but soon ventured into sketch comedy with much success. Ron's troupe, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew, won the 2003 and 2004 Canadian Comedy Award for Best Sketch Troupe, and were nominated again in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 they were also featured on the CBC special Sketch with Kevin McDonald, for which they won another Canadian Comedy Award for Best Taped Live Performance.
Ron began doing stand-up in April of 2003 and within a few months he had won the prestigious Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award, given to Toronto's most promising new comedian; he then also won the 2004 Canadian Comedy Award for Best Stand-up Newcomer.
Recently described as "the next stand-up wunderkind" by Frank Magazine, Ron has established himself as one of the most intelligent and original comedy minds Canada has to offer. He is a regular at all of Toronto's comedy venues, including the ALTdot COMedy Lounge and Sketch Comedy Lounge, Spirits, The Big Ass Comedy Show, Pirate Video Cabaret, The Laugh Resort, Yuk Yuk's and the Tim Sims Playhouse (The Second City).
On Television, Ron stars in MuchMusic's highest rated show Video On Trial and its spin-off, Stars on Trial. He was a featured performer on CBC's Halifax Comedy Festival and The Canadian Comedy Awards: Nice Stand-up Special.
Ron is also an incredibly gifted writer, with an Honours B.F.A. in Screenwriting from York University. He starred in his own series of shorts for The Comedy Network, From the Desk of Ron Sparks, for which he won another Canadian Comedy Award for Best One Person Show in 2005. He has written for CBC's This Hour Has 22 Minutes and has won several awards as a playwright.
With the Tim Sims Award and five Canadian Comedy Awards already to his credit in such a short time, Ron Sparks has quickly become one of the most sought-after talents on the Canadian comedy scene. |
